Italian school painting after Michelangelo Merisi da Carvaggio's "The Cardsharps" (originally painted c. 1594) depicting three men at a card table. Two men conspire to rig the game against the third, unsuspecting player. Possible signature and date en verso, "Andrea Ranaldi 1686/8". Later giltwood frame with laurel- and rope-molded edges. Sight: 41 in H. x 51 in. W. Frame: 47 in. H x 57 in. W. Late 17th century.
Condition
Craquelure throughout. Significant obscuring of image by a thin substance over the varnish layer, possibly paper adhesions. Possible small patch (under 1/4") upper left corner, background area. UV light inspection reveals minimal if any inpainting.
