Passport signed by U.S. Secretary of State Daniel Webster (1782-1852) in black ink, for the Reverend W.G.E. Cunningham of Knoxville, Tennessee, dated April 12th, 1852. Later ink inscription from the French Consulate in Shanghai granting Cunningham, his wife, and possibly children passage to Marseille, dated October 2nd, 186X, with signature and ink stamp of Second French Empire, lower left. Unframed. 16 5/8" H x 10 3/8" W. Note: Reverend Cunningham served as the preacher at Church Street Methodist Church in 1847. The Reverend Cunningham later served as the preacher of a small Methodist Episcopal Church, South congregation from 1873-1874.
