Family register sampler of the Walker family of Rogersville, Tennessee, circa 1845, silk on linen, worked by Ella L. Walker, daughter of Frances Grantham Rogers Walker (1795-1883) and her second husband, Dr. Hugh Kelso Walker (1802-1866). Featuring rows of both uppercase and lowercase alphabets over a listing of family members and a verse and signature reading "Defend the poor and fatherless/do justice to the afflicted and needy. Worked by E. L. Walker." Laid on blue fabric and housed in a later gilt wood frame. Sampler measures 22 1/4" H x 13" W. Frame: 22 1/2" H x 13 1/4" W. Note: Ella, also known as Elvira, Walker was born 1835. This sampler records her older siblings Joseph and Margaret, and younger brother Thomas (born 1837), who were born to Frances and Hugh Walker, along with her older half siblings Mary Elizabeth Gaines McKinney, Charles McKinney, and Frances Gaines Lynn, from her mother's first marriage to James Taylor Gaines, and Frances Gaines' spouse Charles Lynn. Note: Ella Walker was the granddaughter of Joseph Rogers, the founder of Rogersville, TN, and his wife Mary "Polly" Amis Rogers, whose portraits are being sold in this auction along with portraits of Ella's parents, Dr. Hugh Kelso Walker and Frances Rogers Walker. Ella never married and died in 1918 in Rogersville.
