Two (2) Charles George Copeland (American/ Massachusetts, Maine. 1858 - 1945) grisaille and gouache illustrations on paperboard depicting the Civil War. Including one depicting a soldier leaving via the gate of a home with a couple shown in the background beneath an open doorway, the female crying, presumably after receiving bad news. The other depicts the aftermath of a battle with deceased soldiers strewn along a road with artillery cannon foreground and other figures with a gurney moving a soldier's body to a horse-drawn wagon in the background. Both are signed and dated along the lower margin COPELAND '89. Each illustration is float mounted onto light blue ground and is housed in a painted distressed wood frame. 1st illustration - Sight: 9 1/4" H x 8" W. Framed: 15 3/4" H x 14 3/4" W. 2nd illustration - Sight: 9 3/4" H x 8 3/4" W. Framed: 16 1/2" H x 15 1/4" W. Note: These are possibly illustrations for the book Tramp! Tramp! Tramp!, by George F Root, 1890, Illustrated by Charles Copeland. Artist's Information: Charles Copeland is known for Landscape and marine painting, and illustration. He was a member of the Boston Art Club and the Boston Society of Watercolor Painters. From 1884 to 1909, Copeland exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and the Boston Art Club.

Condition

Both illustrations with overall toning to paper. 1st illustration with bending to both left side corners. 2nd illustration with creasing and losses to lower right corner.
