Two (2) East Tennessee, Blount County, salt-glazed stoneware 1-gallon pottery pitchers, with 3 incised lines around the shoulder by Grindstaff Pottery (1870 - 1890). One with an impressed half-crescent mark reading W. GRINSTAFF 18 to the upper shoulder and upper body, and 1 denoting capacity, and the other pitcher of similar form but not stamped. The stamped pitcher retains an exhibition label for the 2011 “Tennessee Turned: Earthenware and Stoneware Made in East Tennessee 1800-1900” exhibit held at the East Tennessee Historical Society, Tennessee Turned. Both measure: 9 3/4 in. H.
Condition
Stamped pitcher with a chip to the rim and losses to the handle, with only the upper portion of the handle remaining. The second pitcher handle is absent and has errant white residue on the exterior. Both pitchers with scattered firing flaws to the body.
