Note: a copy of the original 1965 Toraya Co., Tokyo, purchase receipt is available to the winning bidder, along with a handwritten note from the previous owner, stating the screen may have been preserved from a larger panel. Receipt has tax stamp and estimates the age as "circa 1810." 2nd item: Japanese 2-panel screen painting on silk depicting traditional scenes with court figures in a landscape of hills, trees, and sea. Left panel depicts a female collecting herbs for her vessel, while a nobleman and page look on. Right panel depicts 3 noblewomen engaged in the courtly custom of "Pine Seedling Pulling," a seasonal activity traditionally paired with herb gathering. Mounted on two hinged panels to an ebonized wood frame with gilt hardware, and a silk brocade border surrounding the image. Green solid silk lining en verso. Framed: 50 3/4 in. L x 46 in. H. Some age cracks and repaired tears, the largest being a 16 in. vertical repair in the center right panel. Framing and silk brocade en verso in excellent condition. Item 2: Overall good condition, with scattered light foxing. Silk lining en verso has scattered staining and 3 punctures, the largest being 4 in. x 1 in. near right bottom quadrant and two approximately 2 x 2 inches on left and right panels.
