1st item: Japanese 4-panel screen painting on mulberry paper depicting samurai warriors on horseback, with period red armour and animated facial expressions. Mounted on four hinged panels to an ebonized wood frame with gilt hardware, and a double silk brocade border surrounding the image. Purple floral silk brocade lining en verso. Framed: 66 in. L x 26 in. H. Sight: 60 1/2 in. L x 20 1/2 in. H (17 in. L x 25 3/4 in. H folded). First half 19th century. Note: a copy of the original 1965 Toraya Co., Tokyo, purchase receipt is available to the winning bidder, along with a handwritten note from the previous owner, stating the screen may have been preserved from a larger panel. Receipt has tax stamp and estimates the age as "circa 1810." 2nd item: Japanese 2-panel screen painting on silk depicting traditional scenes with court figures in a landscape of hills, trees, and sea. Left panel depicts a female collecting herbs for her vessel, while a nobleman and page look on. Right panel depicts 3 noblewomen engaged in the courtly custom of "Pine Seedling Pulling," a seasonal activity traditionally paired with herb gathering. Mounted on two hinged panels to an ebonized wood frame with gilt hardware, and a silk brocade border surrounding the image. Green solid silk lining en verso. Framed: 50 3/4 in. L x 46 in. H. Sight: 45 in. L x 40 1/4 in. H (25 1/2 in. L x 46 in. H folded). Late 19th/Early 20th century.

Condition

Item 1: Overall good condition, with scattered accretions, especially left panel upper corner. Some age cracks and repaired tears, the largest being a 16 in. vertical repair in the center right panel. Framing and silk brocade en verso in excellent condition. Item 2: Overall good condition, with scattered light foxing. Silk lining en verso has scattered staining and 3 punctures, the largest being 4 in. x 1 in. near right bottom quadrant and two approximately 2 x 2 inches on left and right panels.
