Osvaldo Salas (Cuban, 1914-1992), two framed gelatin silver prints depicting Fidel Castro, including one (1) with Ernest Hemingway ("Con Hemingway", c. 1960) and one (1) walking through Central Park in New York (c. 1955). Each signed in ink with title and date of negative, with embossed blind stamp 'Salas/Habana Cuba'. Inscribed to verso 'Negative by Osvaldo Salas printed by Robert Salas Limited Edition Cuba'. Each printed circa 1990, matted and framed under plexiglass in identical black spiral twist frames, and measuring the same. Image: 12 1/2" H × 16 1/2" W (32 x 42 cm). Framed: 26" H x 22" W. Ref. Osvaldo and Roberto Salas, "Fidel's Cuba," p. 34-35 and p. 84-85. Two copies of this book accompany this lot. Biography: Osvaldo Salas was born in Havana and emigrated as a teen to New York City. A self taught photographer, he shot celebrities and sports figures for publications including the New York Times. In 1955, he met Fidel Castro, who was in Manhattan to raise money for his 26th of July Movement. Salas photographed Castro during that visit (including his well-known image of Castro walking across Central Park, a print of which is in this lot), and Castro eventually personally selected Salas and his son Roberto as top photographers for the new Cuban government newspaper. The Salases captured hundreds of memorable images, including Castro's only meeting with writer Ernest Hemingway in 1960 (a print of which is also featured in this lot). (Souce:"Fidel's Cuba").
