Two satirical religious paintings depicting Catholic cardinals. 1st item: Oil on canvas painting after Toby Edward Rosenthal's (American/German, 1848-1917) 1896 painting "Sleeping Cardinal" AKA "The Cardinal's Portrait," with a puzzled monk who depicts a cardinal in a pious pose while his model sleeps. 2nd item: Oil on canvas painting after Jehan Georges Vibert's (French, 1840-1902) 1874 painting "The Schism" housed in the collection of the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art. A cardinal and another religious official sit facing away from one another with an open book, likely a Bible, face-down on the floor between them. Both spuriously signed "J.M. Kavanagh," lower right. Both housed in giltwood frames. Both sights: 19 1/4 in. H x 23 1/2 in. W. Both frames: 24 3/4 in. H x 28 3/4 in. W. Early 20th century. 

Overall very good condition. Both frames with minor abrasions and losses.
