Group of three (3) Japanese kacho-e bird and flower woodblock prints. Item 1: After Utagawa Hiroshige AKA Ando Hiroshige (Japan, 1797-1858) color woodblock print on wove paper, "Seven Songbirds," c. 1910. Matsumoto 26. Printed by Matsumoto Print Works, Nagoya, Japan. The c. 1913 Matsumoto print catalog describes this print as "Seven mejiro [known as Japanese silver-eye] perching on a melon-vine." Floated under glass in a distressed giltwood frame with giltwood fillet and white mat. Sheet: 7 3/8 in H x 5 in W. Frame: 14 3/4 in H x 11 3/4 in. Item 2: Ohara Koson AKA Shoson or Hoson (Japan, 1877-1945) color woodblock print on wove paper, "Two Mallards," c. 1910. A male duck takes flight or alights on the water while a female watches from beneath an outcropping of vegetation. Floated under glass in a painted and giltwood frame with cream mat. Sheet: 6 5/8 in H x 3 11/16 in W. Frame: 12 in H x 9 1/2 in W. Item 3: After Yamaguchi Soken (Japan, 1759-1818) scarce color woodblock print of a peacock perched on rocks, with bamboo above and flowers below, 19th c. After a painting by Soken. Floated under glass in an ebonized and unpainted wood frame with tan mat and mount and green reveal. Sheet: 14 1/4 in H x 6 1/4 in W. Frame: 20 7/8 in H x 11 7/16 in W. Note: Another impression of this print is in the Cooper Hewitt collection, accession number 1955-39-2.
1st and 2nd items in overall very good condition, with minor tonings to sheets. 3rd item with toning and scattered creasing plus minor losses to edges, especially left edge, and pinhole puncture to upper center edge. Not examined out of frames. Frames with minor abrasions and losses.
