Rogers' will, penned in 1837, provides a detailed look at life on a prosperous West Tennessee plantation in the second quarter of the 19th century when this part of the state was still relatively undeveloped. In it, Rogers leaves his wife, Agnes, and his children a total of 25 named slaves (Eliza and her daughter Catherine, Lewis, Emeline, Henry, Grace, Freeman, Mary, Martha, Daniel, Mima, Gilla, Henderson, McKlin, Pleasant, Sarah and her child Lawson, Alfred, "Winny and her children", Caroline, Charles, "Nelley and her children", Uoy, Simon, and Candis), along with various livestock, horses, carriage, and an extensive itemized listing of household furnishings. 4 pp front and back, plus 1 page regarding exhibition of the will in court, dated 1853. Both items circa 1853. 2nd item: Letter from Abner Stith, dated Jan. 11, 1827 from Henry County, West District of TN, to an unknown recipient, regarding "your Ringstaff tract of land" the recipient had agreed to sell him based on "our agreement in Carolina" for $3 dollars per acre. Having already "built a small log cabin and settled upon it", Stith writes, "I wish to make improvements on the land, and cannot with propriety take any step towards it until I hear from you." 1 p. front and back. 3rd item: 1827 pension claim by Matthew Myrick, of Henry County, Tennessee. Myrick had enlisted for a 12 month term in 1779 in the state of North Carolina in the company commanded by Captain Campbell.
