Adelia Armstong Lutz (American/Tennessee, 1859-1931) oil on masonite board, night scene landscape painting with snow that blows rapidly through a pine forest while a crescent moon hangs in the sky at upper center, 1924. Signed and dated lower right. Housed in an ebonized wood frame. Sight: 23 1/5 in. H x 17 1/2 in. W. Framed: 28 1/2 in. H x 22 1/4 in. W. Biographical note: Adelia Armstrong Lutz is known for her portrait, landscape, and still life painting. Born in Jefferson County, Tennessee, she studied art at the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, D.C., the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and abroad. Upon her return to Knoxville in 1887, she was a director of the Knoxville Art Club and co-organized the Nicholson Art League. She married John Edwin Lutz in 1885, and they built their home, "Westwood," on Knoxville's Kingston Pike in approximately 1890.

Condition

Overall very good condition, with surface grime and localized retouches to 3 1/2 x 1 1/2 inch area to right of moon. Frame with minor abrasions and losses.

By descent through the family of the artist.
