Albrecht Durer (German, 1471-1528) iron etching on laid paper, “The Sudarium Held by One Angel,” 1516. A Meder Ic-II impression, already with faint rust marks but still with vertical scratches to angel's right wing and to lower right, from cloud to monogram. With two 19th or very early 20th c. Koninglich Kupferstichkabinett, Stuttgart, collector's marks (Lugt 2323 and 2324) plus two unknown collector's marks: a flaming cross (Lugt 2910) and "Magjkel" stamp (not in Lugt). Illegible pencil inscription, likely another unidentified collector's mark (initials), to verso. Housed in a cream window mat with black reveal and recto and verso openings. Ref.: Bartsch 26; Meder, Hollstein 27. Sheet: 7 1/4 in. H x 5 5/16 in. W. Mat: 14 in. H x 12 in. W.

Condition

Overall very good condition. A very good, richly inked impression with strong contrasts. Hinged along upper edge en verso with archival tape. Sheet is trimmed to borderline. With a minor rubbed area and negligible, pinpoint loss to right edge of sheet. A speck of ink to lower right corner, in cloud. Various pencil inscriptions to verso including Bartsch and accession or inventory numbers.

Provenance

Private Memphis collection; Bassenge, Berlin, May 29, 2019, lot 5112; Christies, London, November 28, 1995, lot 104; Koniglich Kupferstichkabinett, Stuttgart.
