Andre Hambourg (French, 1909-1999), "Beau Temps sur la Plage, Honfleur," oil on canvas painting depicting figures on a beach under a serene sky, viewed from a distance. Signed lower left and titled en verso. Housed in a partially distressed giltwood frame with carved edges. Sight: 13 in. W x 10 in. H. Frame: 23 in. W x 20 in. D. Biography: Andre Hambourg has been called "the grand gentleman of French Post Impressionism" and is best known for his landscapes and seascapes. He studied at L'Ecole Nationale Superieure des Arts Decoratifs and the Ecole Nationale des Beaux Arts in the studio of Lucien Simon. During the 1930s, he worked in studios in Montparnasse where he was influenced by modernist movements and its artists. He married the daughter of marine painter Eugene Boudin, well known for his scenes of Honfleur. In 1961, Hambourg was honored with the Grande Medaille de Vermeil of the City of Paris for his artistic contributions. His works are in several European museums including the Musee National d'Art Moderne, the Musee d'Art Moderne de la Ville, and the Eugene Boudin Museum in Honfleur.

Painting: overall very good condition. Some light discoloration to varnish layer and three small inclusions to sky area. Frame: some shallow surface chipping to molding, possibly in the making.
