Attributed to Philipp Peter Roos (German//Italian, 1655-1706), also known as Rosa di Tivoli, oil on canvas Italianate pastoral landscape painting with multiple figures surrounded by sheep, goats, and cattle before a ruined stone structure and opposite a stream, 17th century. A rider in red points toward a mountainous vista and interacts with a woman who stands to his right while a second woman, seen from behind, milks a large, central cow. Other figures walk through the landscape in the distance at left and right and another ruined building stands at left. Unsigned. Housed in a painted and giltwood frame. With printed text attributing the painting to Roos affixed to the front of the frame. Sight: 32" H x 45 1/2" W. Framed: 36 3/4' H x 50 1/2' W. 

Condition

Canvas has been relined. Multiple campaigns of restoration and retouching throughout, largest to 9" x 5" area, lower right in landscape, and 4 1/2" x 4" area, upper right in trees. Also with scattered, stabilized flaking, largest area to left of central ruin, 1 1/4" x 1/4," and repaired puncture with retouch to top of central ruin, 2 1/4" x 1/2."  See U/V photography. Frame with losses and abrasions.
