After John James Audubon (Haiti/New York, 1785-1851) hand-colored lithograph that depicts a white wolf which bares its fangs and paws at a bone that lies beside an extinguished campfire, 1845. Plate 72 from the imperial folio edition of The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America published by J.T. Bowen. Lettering text reads "No. 15" and  "Plate LXXI[I.]," upper corners, plus "Drawn From Nature by J.J. Audubon, F.R.S. F.R.S.," "Canis Lupus, Linn (Var Albus.) / White American Wolf./ Male. / 1/3 Natural Size," and "Lith[ographe]d Printed & Col[ore]d by J.T. Bowen, Philad[elphi]a 1845," lower margin. Housed under glass in a distressed painted, silvered, and giltwood frame. Sight: 19 1/2 in. H x 25 in. W. Frame: 31 1/2 in. H x 26 1/2 in. W.

Condition

Overall very good condition, with even toning to sheet, fading especially to pinks, and scattered, minor foxing throughout plus evidence of mat burn not visible in sight area. Faint inking in lettering and missing final "I" in plate number are likely inherent. Not examined out of frame. Frame with abrasions and losses, especially to lower left corner.

Provenance

Private Kentucky collection, by descent from Jeannette Marks of Lexington.
