Carroll Shope (American/Tennessee, 1931- 2019) oil on canvas painting depicting a side view of the historic Cade's Cove Methodist Church, built in 1902, and its cemetery, now part of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Signed "Carroll Shope" and dated "February 1974" lower right. Housed in the original painted wooden frame with linen liner. Sight: 27 7/16 in H x 35 3/8 in W. Framed: 30 5/16 in H x 38 1/4 in W. Note: The congregation of the Cade's Cove Methodist Church can be dated back to 1830; their original building was a log structure. This church building was built in 1902, reportedly in 115 days for the cost of $115 by blacksmith, carpenter and pastor John Campbell. The new building followed the old design of having two entrances for the practice of dividing men and women up during services, but the Methodists in Cades Cove never followed that custom. The cemetery is the second oldest one in the Cove and many of the early settlers including Tiptons, Feezells, and Sparkses are buried there. Source: the National Park Service.
