Continental school, likely Italian, carved wood polychrome and gilt blackamoor figure that depicts a young man who stands on a partial, diminutive Venetian gondola with metal fero da prova or prow ornament. His shoulder-length hair descends from beneath a fez with floral motif and he wears an ornately decorated tunic and tights. His left hand grips an oar and in his right hand he he raises a stand or candle pan. All atop a giltwood and polychrome base with floral decoration. 32 1/4 in. H x 12 in. W x 8 in. D. Late 19th century.
Condition
With repaired breaks without loss to both ankles plus repaired 13-inch horizontal split to upper body, from lower hem of tunic up. Also with scattered gilt and paint loss throughout, largest areas to left side of abdomen and tunic at left hip, 3 inch x 1 inch and 3 inch x 3/4 inch.
