Note: we would like to thank Burchfield scholar Nancy Weekly for her research into this previously unknown work, which may have been a gift from the artist to his sister Frances (d. 1933) appearing under the name "Hay Path" in his handmade painting index (Vol. 1, no. 36, not illustrated). A copy of the full report from the Burchfield Penney Center is available by request.
Artist Biography: Charles Ephraim Burchfield (1893–1967) was an American painter renowned for his watercolor landscapes. After studying at the Cleveland School of Art, he initially worked as a designer in Buffalo, New York, where he adopted a more realistic style. His career flourished after 1929 when he began full-time painting, gaining recognition with a Museum of Modern Art exhibition and being hailed by Life magazine as one of America's ten greatest painters. In the 1940s, Burchfield returned to more mystical, transcendental landscapes, aiming to express nature's inner mysteries through invented symbols. (Source: burchfieldpenney.org)
