Four (4) Civil War era tintypes, including Colonel Calvin Harvey Walker of the 3rd Tennessee Infantry (Clack’s Tennessee Brigade). Sixth plate image of Walker wearing a captain’s frock and Wheel Cap, set in gutta percha case. Walker, nicknamed "Old Ballie", enlisted as a Captain and was later elected as Colonel of the 3rd Tennessee after his release from capture at the Battle of Fort Donelson. At the Battle of Kolb Farm, Walker was killed when a shell exploded and a fragment struck him in the face. An eyewitness noted that the shrapnel “blew off all his head except chin and rather long whiskers.” A photograph of Walker with his brother James is featured on the cover of the book From the Flame of Battle to the Fiery Cross: The 3rd Tennessee Infantry With Complete Roster. Also included is one sixth plate image of a soldier identified on accompanying tag as Henry P. Covault of the 11th Ohio Infantry company G, with patriotic mat stamped with flag, shield and banner insignia. According to the tag accompanying this lot, Covault was wounded on Sept. 1, 1862 at the second battle of Bull Run at Manassas, VA. (Note: we have not independently verified this information). Also included is one sixth plate image of a soldier holding a rifle with inscription "My father's picture Civil War"; and one ninth plate image of an unidentified soldier. All in leather cases except where noted.
Smallest image is dark but in very good condition; other images with degrees of flaking and wear to images and moderate wear to cases. Gutta percha case has a 1 1/2 in. area of loss to the side with hinges. Patriotic mat with some oxidation spotting. Tape with past purchase information.
Private Nashville collection.
