Rare Memphis Tennessee retailed pocket watch, the white enameled dial with Roman Numerals and seconds dial, signed J.E. MERRIMAN & CO MEMPHIS for James E. Merriman (working Memphis, 1845-1860). Fusee movement, possibly English. Gilt backplate engraved "Merriman Co.N1474 and "Memphis/Tennessee" . Plain round coin silver case stamped "D & Co" and "coin" in separate banners, 61114 (attributed to Duhme & Co., Cincinnati). Keys present. 3 1/4 in. x 2 3/8 in. Circa 1855. Note: this watch is illustrated and discussed on p. 128 of the book "Tennessee Silversmiths" by  Dr. Benjamin H. Caldwell, Jr. (pub. Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts, 1988). Dr. Caldwell, who was a previous owner of this watch, writes that James E. Merriman established the firm of J.E. Merriman & Co. at 32 Front Row, Memphis, in 1847. While at this address, the firm advertised "Watches, Clocks, Jewelry, Silverware Gold Pens, Etc." . By 1856, the firm moved to 253 Main Street, where it remained through 1860.

Condition

Dial with hairlines and a few tiny edge chips. One hand bent at tip. Movement off track, chain broken, lacking hinge pins. Case with numerous small dents and repairs. No monograms.
