Collection of antique clubs, consisting of 4 golf clubs and 2 Chole clubs. 1st Item: An early hickory shafted "blacksmith's" cleek, with a smooth-faced dish face, hand tooling on the hosel, leather grip, ca. 1840. 43" Length. 2nd Item: A Willie Park Jr. patent compressed brassie club, stamped "W. Park's Patent Compressed", scared head (splice), having a golden beech head with full brass sole plate and leather face insert, spliced to hickory shaft stamped "WM PARK". Ca. 1890s. 45 1/2" Length. Note: Willie Park was a golfer of some renown, but also a distinguished clubmaker, patenting several original designs and opening a retail shop in Edinburgh and a manufacturing warehouse in London. His real love was in course design, most notably London's Sunningdale course, and numerous courses in the US. 3rd Item: Right-handed chole club, with hand-forged head. Ca. early 1800s. 40" Length. 4th Item: Left-handed chole club, authentic gutta percha grip, ca.1870. 40" Length. 5th Item: An unusual small headed rut iron, smooth faced with a very heavy hand-tooled hosel, hickory shaft, Ca. 1850's. 37 3/4" Length. 6th Item: Arthur Brown / Harry Vardon medium lie putter, hand punched face, old leather grip, oval hosel onto oval shaft, stamped with Gibson star cleek mark and W. Brown Special; also registration number and "Hand Forged Made In Scotland". Ca. 1905, 35 3/4" Length. William Gibson, a blacksmith, learned how to make iron clubs from an early age and set up his own shop in Edinburgh in 1890; in the early 20th Century was said to be the largest manufacturer of golf clubs in the world, supplying many professionals of the day (Golf in the Making, 1979, Ian T. Henderson, David I. Stirk). Note: All items purchased from Sean Arnold Sporting Antiques, London. A copy of their hand-written product descriptions will be available to the buyer.
All clubs in appropriate age-worn condition, unknown if grips are original unless noted. Older Chole club (3rd item) with split to bottom of shaft causing looseness to head; waxed thread missing.
