1st and 2nd Items: COLTON'S ATLAS OF THE WORLD, George Woolworth Colton, New York: J.H. Colton and Co., 1856. Two large folio volumes, bound in publisher's brown cloth, with gilt and blind stamped covers and spine, full-page hand-colored plates, each with accompanying informational text. Volume I, "North and South America", containing 57 plates; with plates of US states and territories as of 1855, featuring individual cities such as Boston, Philadelphia, and New York City (with "Proposed Central Park" area); US western frontier territories "Nebraska and "Kanzas" Territories, "New Mexico and Utah", and "Oregon and Washington"; Central and South American plates including "West Indies", "Cuba and Jamaica", and "Patagonia". Volume II, "Europe, Asia, Africa, Oceanica, Etc.", containing 49 plates - frontispiece, general maps/charts numbered II-XIII, and specific continent/country/city plates numbered 1-36; features individual cities Paris and London. Each volume, overall:19-1/4" H x 17" W; Plates 18-1/2" H x 16" W. 3rd Item: Map of the Seat of War in Africa (North Eastern Sheet), George W. Colton, Charles B. Colton, 1884. Laid in to rear of Volume II. Hand-colored, single sheet engraved map of Northeast Africa during the Mahdist War (1881-1899), primarily Egypt and Sudan, with inset Nile Delta. (CHECK) 18 1/4" H x 15 1/2" W.  Note: G. W. Colton followed his father's career path to become a cartographer and engraver. In 1855, inspired to create a detailed world atlas, issued the first volume of his Atlas of the World, with the second volume following the next year. A single volume edition was issued later.

PROVENANCE: By descent in the historic Pinckney family of Runnymede Plantation, South Carolina.

Both volumes have general wear and scuffs to covers, moderate foxing and toning to text pages throughout, generally not affecting plates. Volume 1: Covers separated, spine cover absent, but pages bound tightly and intact; end papers creased with tears and chips; frontispiece with considerable foxing; missing 4 plates of 61 and corresponding informational pages- Plate 10, New Hampshire; Plate 31 Alabama; Plate 36, Texas (#2); Plate 52, California. Volume II: All plates and text pages complete in tight binding; covers loose, spine chipped. 3rd Item: Chipping, holes and tears around outside edges, not affecting image.
