Everett Shinn (New York/Pennsylvania, 1876-1953) black and white watercolor illustration painting from the book "The Christ Story" published by John C. Winston, 1943. An angel hovers over a set of steps in a landscape setting. Signed lower center "Everett Shinn 1943." Matted and framed under glass in a later molded giltwood frame. Sight: 15 in H x 12 1/2 in W. Frame: 26 in H x 23 in W. Note: A photocopy of a note stating "an authentic drawing by my father Everett Shinn" signed Davidson Shinn accompanies this painting. Biography: Everett Shinn was a member of the Ashcan School, and "the Eight," an American social realist painter and illustrator who focused on lower class urban themes as well as images of the theater and more glamorous aspects of urban life. He was born in New Jersey, and attended the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts as a student of Thomas Anshutz. He then worked as a staff artist for the Philadelphia Press with George Luks, William Glackens, and John Sloan. Based in New York, he traveled extensively and also did theater and film work. In 1949, he was elected an academician of the National Academy. He is particularly noted for his skill with drawing and watercolor. 

Condition

Overall excellent condition; very minor toning. Not examined out of frame.

The Entrekin Family Trust; Jane and Ervin Entrekin, Nashville. According to note on label en verso, the painting's past owners include Bruce C. Robbins Rothlisberger; Charles T. Henry, Sarasota, FL; James Graham Gallery, New York; estate of the artist.
