Johannes Adam Simon Oertel (active/lived New Jersey, Virginia / Germany, 1823-1909) oil on board bust portrait titled "A Prophet". Depicting a profile portrait of a man with long flowing hair and a beard, attired in a green overcoat with blue eyes focused intently ahead. Monogram signature lower right. Exhibited, "The Romantic Vision of Johannes Adam Simon Oertel, 1823-1909", held in 1995 at the University Gallery of the University of the South, Sewanee, TN. (A copy of the exhibition catalog is available to the winning bidder). Housed in a molded gilt wood frame. Sight: 12 1/2" H x 8 1/2" W. Framed: 15 3/4" H x 11 3/4" W.
PROVENANCE: Private Southern Collection.
Condition
Overall good condition with a few areas to left margin with paint touch-up and a few scattered minute pinprick losses. Frame with craquelure to gesso surface together with a few losses with gilt touch-up.
