Frederick R. Bates (American, 19th century-20th century) oil on canvas maritime painting titled "Sundown, Boston Harbor," depicting two figures standing in the water just off shore before a ship's bow, and two figures in a rowboat by its port, with additional sailboats in the bay. In the background, the sun hovers at the horizon. Signed lower right and dated 1893. Titled en verso. Housed in a molded giltwood frame. Labels en verso for Vose Galleries, Boston, and Cavalier Galleries, Greenwich, CT. Sight: 10" H x 12" W. Framed: 12" H x16" W.
Condition
UV light reveals a repaired 3" scratch or tear at left edge, sky area, some infill painting along top edge from stretcher or frame wear, and other scattered small spots of infill. Likely lined, revarnished.
