Henry Van Notti (New Jersey, 1876-1962) oil on canvas board painting depicting the Manhattan skyline in New York, as viewed from across the East River. Signed lower right "H Van Notti" over initials "HVN". Additionally signed (twice) en verso and dated "1939". Old NY artist board label en verso and remnants of another paper label on frame. Housed in a carved giltwood frame. Sight: 13 1/2" H x 17 1/2" W. Framed: 18" H x 22" W. Biography: Henry Van Notti was born in 1876 in Lugano, Switzerland. He received his formal training from the academy of Fine Arts in Turin, and in Milan, Italy. Van Notti emigrated to the United States in 1903, settling in Weehawken, New Jersey, across the Hudson River from Manhattan, where he remained until 1962. He is known for his impressionist paintings of the New York City skyline, painted at various times of the day, from the New Jersey side of the Hudson. He is also remembered for his participation in the National Public Works Program and for painting murals in many public buildings, including the New York Courthouse in Foley Square.

Condition

3 1/2" streak lower right. 1" light streak/smudge lower left. 3 pin sized holes at each upper corner and at center. 1/2" scratch near left edge, center. Overall light grime. A few scattered small inclusions. Frame is likely original with wear and abrasions; some scattered losses to edges up to 3" L.
