American Revolution related British political engraving by William Hogarth (British, 1697-1764) of John Wilkes Esq. Early 19th century impression on J. Whatman watermarked paper from the original 1763 engraved plate. Hogarth's famous satirical portrait depicts Wilkes, a British politician, journalist, and champion of American Independence, as a demon with horned wig, holding a pole with a "Liberty cap." Two important editions of Wilkes' opposition newspaper THE NORTH BRITON sit on a table beside him: No. 17 (in which he attacked Hogarth) and No. 45, a number recalling the Jacobite Rising of 1745 and the edition in which he criticized King George III's speech endorsing the Paris Peace Treaty of 1763 (leading to a warrant for his arrest). Plate: 13 3/4" H x 9 1/8" W. Sheet: 25 1/2" H x 19 1/2" W.

Condition

Margins appear untrimmed. Multiple 1/4 to 1/2" tears to edges. Some minor creases and scattered foxing throughout.
