Itzchak (Isaac) Tarkay (Serbia/Israel, 1935-2012) original acrylic on canvasboard painting titled "Brown Skirt," portraying a reclining female figure lying barefoot, surrounded by flowering branches and ambiguous areas of muted color. Signed "Tarkay" lower right. Inscribed title and printed Wentworth Gallery label en verso of backing. Housed and matted in a giltwood frame with bead course sight edge. Sight: 15 1/2" H x 19 1/2" W. Framed: 25 1/4" H x 29 1/4" W. Note: A certificate of authenticity from Wentworth Gallery, original receipt, and an artist informational sheet are available to the winning bidder. Artist biography: Itzchak Tarkay was born in 1935 near the border of Yugoslavia and Hungary. At the young age of 9, Nazis forced his family to live in the Mauthausen concentration camp until the end of the war. Upon his return home, he developed an interest in art. He later went to study at the Bezalel Art Academy after his family immigrated to Jerusalem. However, due to his family's difficult financial state, he left school after only one year. He was allowed to continue his scholarship until his mobilization to the Israeli Army. Tarkay enrolled at the Anvi Institute of Art in Tel Aviv, graduating in 1956. His art has been exhibited both in Israel and abroad.
