Jack Clouse Deloney (American/Alabama, b. 1940) small watercolor on paper Alabama landscape depicting Black workers building a fence around a two story, white farm house and barren trees under a cloudy sky. Signed J. Deloney lower right. Housed under glass in a molded wood frame with beige linen mat. Deloney studio label en verso with pencil inscribed date of April 1974. Sight: 6 in W x 4 in H. Frame: 11 1/2 in W x 9 1/2 in D. Biography: Illustrator and painter Jack Deloney is best known for his scenes of life in the South, often derived from old photographs and his own memories. He was introduced to painting while battling polio as a child. Deloney went on to work as a graphic designer and illustrator in the 1960s including for the Methodist Publishing House in Nashville where he was a book designer. He exhibited paintings with the Alabama and Louisiana Watercolor Societies, the Atlanta Artist Club, the Alabama Art League, and the Ozark Art Club (where he served as president).

Condition

Not examined out of frame. Painting appears to be in very good condition with one tiny spot of foxing in the sky and some faint toning to paper. Scuffs and small losses to frame edges.

Provenance

The collection of Dr. James and Susan O'Neill.
