Jean Wall Penland (North Carolina, 1938-2019) oil on canvas painting depicting the upper half of a nude man with his head slightly lowered against a dynamic background rendered in an earthy palette with broad, gestural brush strokes. Unsigned (not examined under backing board). Label en verso for Vanderbilt Fine Arts Gallery, acquired in 1979. Narrow black painted frame. Sight: 24 in. square. Frame: 25 in. square. Artist Biography: Jean Penland earned a M.A. from Western Carolina University and furthered her studies in art and architecture at North Carolina State University and Cooper Union in New York. She specialized in painting and print making and opened a Gallery, Penlandia, in Asheville in 1950. She also taught at WCU. She was awarded a Jackson Pollock - Lee Krasner Foundation Grant in 1989 as well as an Adolph and Esther Gottlieb Foundation Grant in 1993
