Johan Hagaman (Indiana/TN, b. 1950), "The World Curled Round," 2014, concrete, copper, paper, wax and milk paint, female form with roots or thorny branches emerging from her head and flowering branches emanating from her feet. 31 1/2 in H x 15 in W x 5 in D. A photocopy of the receipt for this work from Cumberland Gallery, Nashville, for $3,450, is available to the winning bidder, along with the artist's statement: "My recent work was inspired by a vine that, when I wasn't watching, overtook and transformed my garden. While I was trying to shape nature, nature was shaping me - the call and response of creation, a call to wonder, a call to pay attention, a call to give attention to what is in my world." Note: Johan Hagaman received her B.A. and M.S. in English at Indiana University in Bloomington before settling in Nashville. She has exhibited extensively in TN, NC, CO and CA in solo and group shows. Hagaman’s work is in the collections of Gaylord Opryland Hotel, Tennessee State Museum, Jackson Hole Art Association in Wyoming, Evansville Museum of Art and Sciences in Indiana, Massure Museum of Art in Louisiana, the University of South Florida Museum, and the Genesco Corporate Collection among others. In 2005 she received the Individual Artists Fellowship in Visual Art from the Tennessee Arts Commission. (Source: The Tennessee Arts Commission).
