Johann Achert (German, 1655-1730) Baroque oil on copper painting depicting a lady in an ornate, gold-embroidered and jeweled gown with a subtle halo, seated and holding a basket of flowers with a putto at her feet. Behind the figures, a heavy green curtain is pulled back to reveal a formal garden terrace with fountain. The scene is likely an allegory of Spring, with the lady representing Flora, the Roman goddess of springtime, flowers, and fertility. Signed "Jo. Achert Pi." lower right. 19th century foliate carved composition and giltwood frame. Copper panel: 11 1/8 in. H x 8 1/2 in. W. Frame: 18 3/4 in. H x 16 in. W.
Condition
Two short, fine scratches to woman's face and another scratch lower right corner. Area of exfoliation to woman's skirt, lower right quadrant, and other scattered small spots of exfoliation primarily to lower half. The painting was cleaned and varnished in the 1990s-early 2000s. A copy of the conservation receipt (lacking significant details) is available to the winning bidder. Previous campaign of minor inpainting to background. Restoration to frame upper right corner.
