John Geoffrey Caruthers Little (Canadian, 1928-2024), "Rue Laporte, Quebec," oil on board Winter street scene painting. Signed "John Little" lower right. Additionally signed, titled and dated 1966 en verso. Housed in a carved giltwood frame with linen mat. Board: 13 in. W x 10 in. H. Frame: 21 1/2 in. W x 18 1/2 in H. Biography: John Little was known for his paintings depicting urban life, mostly in Montreal and Quebec. He studied at the Art Association of Montreal under Arthur Lismer and Goodridge Roberts and at he Art Students League of New York under Will Barnet and Frank Joseph Reilly.  When he returned to Montreal he worked as a draughtsman at his father's architectural firm, before he began painting full time in 1953. In 1961 he was elected an associate of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts and exhibited there in 1952 and 1966. He also exhibited at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts from 1946 to 1954. Source: Colin S. MacDonald,

Some of the most prestigious private galleries in Canada have exhibited his paintings including Watson Galleries, Continental Galleries and, currently, Galerie Walter Klinkhoff, all of Montreal.

His works are very avidly collected. They are also in some important Canadian public collections including the Leonard & Bina Ellen Art Gallery (Concordia University, Montreal), the Montreal Museum of Contemporary Art, the University of Montreal and the National Gallery of Canada (Ottawa)(5).
 

Condition

Painting - excellent condition. Some light discoloration to mat and a couple of minor abrasions to frame.

Provenance

Private Nashville collection. Consignor's father acquired the painting directly from the artist circa 1960. Consignor's father took music lessons as a child in one of the buildings pictured in the painting.
