Joseph De Martini (New York/Massachusetts, 1896-1984) oil on board abstract seascape painting titled "The Wreck of the St. Christopher" depicting the capsized hull of a ship as its colorful sail dips into the sea with debris in the foreground beneath a dark night sky. Signed "Joseph DeMartini" lower left. Additionally signed and inscribed with title and address en verso. Housed in a painted wooden frame. Sight: 8 7/8" H x 11 7/8" W. Framed: 11 1/8" H x 14" W. Note: Originally built as a U.S. Navy rescue tug to serve in World War II, the vessel was sold to Leopoldo Simoncini of Buenos Aires and renamed "St. Christopher" in 1947. After time chartered as a salvage ship for the ocean liner SS Monte Cervantes, she suffered engine trouble and rudder damage in 1954. St. Christopher was beached and abandoned at Ushuaia, Argentina, where it currently remains.
Minor scratch to center measuring 2" L. Frame with scattered discoloration and water spots.
