John Gable (American/Massachusetts, b. 1944) large watercolor on paper painting of sailboats racing along a New England coastline with structures, a lighthouse, and an American flag visible in the background. Signed "John Gable" lower right. Housed in a contemporary giltwood frame with an off-white mat and gilt filet under glass. Sight: 22 1/2" H x 35 1/2" W. Framed: 37 1/2" H x 50" L. Biography: John Gable, a Contemporary Realist painter and muralist, is known for his vivid use of color, light, and detail and for his breadth of subject matter. His subjects range from portrait and landscape work to commissions for Americas' Cup crews, historical paintings, and a wide range of subjects involving sport. Born in 1944 in Frankfort, Kentucky, Gable has received awards from The National Academy of Design and the American Watercolor Society and has shown work in galleries in New York City, Boston, Portland, and internationally. He graduated from The Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, beginning his career as an automotive designer for many years before leaving for the coast of Maine to take up a career in fine art. As a portraitist, the artist has completed commissions for The Smithsonian Institution. In Maine, a portrait of U.S. Senator William Hathaway hangs in the states Capitol Rotunda. Listed in Who's Who in American Art, Gables murals and paintings are found in museums, universities, corporations, and private collections throughout the country. For his personal and gallery work, the artist steadfastly concentrates on capturing the beauty of the Maine landscape and its people. (Source: the artist's website).

Condition

Overall very good condtion. Slight dampstaining visible to backing does not appear to affect the painting. Not examined outside of frame.
