Lloyd Branson (Tennessee, 1861-1925) impressionist watercolor and gouache on paper painting that depicts an autumn landscape with trees which grow to either side of a rocky stream, 1904. Rendered in orange, yellow, and purple tones with white highlights. Signed and dated in pencil, lower right. Housed under glass in a giltwood frame with gold mat and cream reveal, likely the original McCrary & Branson, Knoxville, TN frame. Sight: 5 1/4 in. H x 12 1/2 in. W. Framed: 12 1/4 in. H x 19 3/4 in. W.
Biography: Branson is known as the first East Tennessee artist to receive formal art training in Europe (at the National Academy of Design in Paris) and studied at the National Academy of Design in New York. He returned to Tennessee and entered into a business partnership with Frank McCrary from 1885 to 1903, and became a leader in the East Tennessee arts community. (Courtesy James A. Painting in overall very good condition. Not examined out of frame. Frame with minor abrasions and losses plus toning to reveal and grime to mat.
