French School, manner of Eugene Boudin, oil on canvas painting depicting a beach crowded with people clothed in Victorian seaside attire. Some ladies dine at tables under umbrellas while other beachgoers cluster in the sun under tents and parasols; the shoreline is barely visible in the background. Unsigned. Circa 1870. Note: painting is framed in a separate simple giltwood frame that fits into a heavy antique frame with remnants of French labels en verso. It is not known if the outer frame is original to the painting. Stretcher: 6" H x 10"W. Inner frame: 8" H x 11 1/8" W. Outer frame, overall: 15" H x 19" W.

Condition
Craquelure throughout. Two 1/8" flakes - one at center, top of tent, the other upper left, sky area. 1/2" area of exfoliation center right edge. Scattered spots of grime. Scattered minute inpainting, largest area 1/8" dia. Outer frame has considerable losses to upper edges and corners of molding and some losses to lower left corner. Separation at upper right corner.
