Marc Chagall (French/Russian, 1887-1985) hand-colored etching on Arches wove paper “Les Tenebres sur l'Egypte (Darkness Over Egypt)," 1931-1939. Plate 31 from The Bible series. Published by Teriade, Paris, 1956. From the edition of 100 signed impressions outside of the book edition of 275 plus 20 H.C. impressions. Signed "M. Ch." in pencil, lower right, and editioned 11/100, lower left. With watermark lower center. Ref.: Cramer Books 30. Housed under glass in an ebonized and giltwood frame with tan textile liner and giltwood fillet. Plate: 11 1/4 in. H x 9 in. W. Sheet: 21 in. H x 15 1/4 in. W. Frame: 28 1/2 in. H x 26 in. W. Note: 1990 Galerie Michael, Beverly Hills purchase receipt, certificate of appraisal signed by Ivo Kirschen, and certificate of authenticity; plus 1995 The Gallery of European Art, Scottsdale, AZ certificate of appraisal and authenticity also signed by Ivo Kirschen, are available to the winning bidder.
Condition
Overall very good condition. A richly inked impression, with strong contrasts. The full sheet with deckled edges. With toning to edges of sheet and mat stain outside of sight area. Sheet is hinged with archival tape affixed to verso.
