School of Charles Webster Hawthorne (American, 1872-1930), oil on board painting depicting a woman in a hat and colorful frock, seated outdoors with hands folded in her lap. Unsigned. Numbered "#8" in pencil lower left. En verso the board is marked "The Upson Company / Lockport NY USA / US PAT" Unframed. 23 3/4 in H x 20 in. W. First quarter 20th century. Note: The subject is devoid of facial features, a technique Hawthorne called "Mud Head" (or "Mudhead") in his plein air art classes at the Cape Cod School of Art, Provincetown, MA. Hawthorne instructed students to use a pallet knife as a brush and positioned models with their backs to the light to place emphasis on conveying light and color rather than fine details.
Condition
A few scattered inclusions, with dirt, bent corners, and rough edges. Paint is thin along edges.
