Oli T. Sihvonen (New York/New Mexico, 1921-1991) ink on heavy wove paper abstract composition with an intricate arrangement of serpentine lines. Signed in pencil, lower right. Unframed. Housed in a plastic sleeve. Sheet: 20 1/2 in. H x 24 5/8 in. W. Sleeve: 22 3/4 in. H x 28 7/8 in. W.  Biographical Note: Known for his geometric abstractions and influential work as a "Taos Modern," Oli Sihvonen studied with Josef Albers at North Carolina’s Black Mountain College before moving to Taos in the early 1950s. His work is often associated with Abstract Expressionism, Minimalism, Hard-Edge Painting, and Op-Art. He died in New York City in 1991

Condition

With minor stain or ink smudge to lower left corner, 3/4 inch x 3/8 inch, and small liquid stain with white pigment to upper right quadrant, 1/4 inch x 1/4 inch. Several areas of minor thinning to upper layer of sheet, largest to upper center, 3/4 inch x 1/4 inch. Sheet with three repaired tears primarily outside of image, largest to upper margin, 1 inch. Dogear creases to upper right and lower left corners and 1-inch vertical crease to lower left margin, near corner. Dampstaining along upper edge, primarily marginal. Pinhole punctures to corners.
