Pauline “Polly” Wallen (Tennessee, 1922-2010) oil on canvas landscape with a small building at lower left and an expansive valley that leads toward a distant mountain range, likely the Smoky Mountains in East Tennessee, all rendered with a palette knife or in loose, impressionistic brushwork. Signed lower right. Housed in a giltwood frame. Canvas: 14 1/8 in. H x 18 1/8 in. W. Framed: 17 1/2 in. H x 21 1/2 in. W. Biography: A Knoxville native, Wallen studied art at Salem College in Winston-Salem, N.C.; the University of Tennessee; the Corcoran Gallery of Art and Stuart Art School, both in Washington, D.C. Her watercolors have won prizes internationally including the 1982 Medaille D’Argent Aquarelle at Le Grand Palais Salon Des Artistes Francais and the 1986 Prix Taylor, also from the Paris Salon (for a landscape sold in our January, 2021 auction). Wallen was also a member of the Tennessee Watercolor Society, American Watercolor Society, and Southeastern Art Association.

Condition

1/2-inch tear without loss to upper left, in treetop, otherwise very good condition.
