1st item: Scarce circa 1860 illustration lithograph after Felix Octavius Carr Darley (1822-1868), "The Attack: Pawnee Indian attacked by Grizzly Bears," published by Jones & Clark, New York. Framed under plexiglass in a later silver-gilt molded frame. Sight: 15 1/4" H x 19 1/2" W. Frame: 17" H x 22" W. 2nd item: Watercolor painting based on the lithograph "The Attack: Pawnee Indian attacked by Grizzly Bears," signed T.S. in lower left corner and dated 1861. Matted but unframed. Window in mat for title, "A Rocky Mountain Scene in Indian Life." Sight: 10 1/4" H x 14 1/4" W. Frame: 19 1/2" H x 22 1/2" W.

Note: The exact source of this rare print seems to be unknown but likely derives from one of several expeditions to the American West that took place in the mid-19th century. The dramatic image also appeared as an engraving in The Illustrated London News, Feb. 25, 1860, without artist attribution. Darley's original ink and gum arabic drawing on which the prints are based is in the collection of the Gilcrease Museum in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Print has significant toning with creases and 1" tears at two corners and along top edge (4 tears total). Slight wear to frame. Not examined out of frame. Painting has toning to paper.
