Peti Clements (Alabama, 1911-1999) Black Americana folk art acrylic on canvas painting titled "Stacking Hay" depicting black and white workers stacking hay in a field and onto horse drawn wagons; a small group gathered around a young girl, meant to represent Clements, carrying a water bucket, in the foreground; and a red barn with three sheep in a fenced enclosure, against a line of trees. Handwritten pencil inscriptions from Clements reading "Stacking Hay/1987/Peti Clements" and "This time I'm the watergirl/Enjoy! Peti", en verso of canvas. Housed in a wooden frame with an off-white linen liner and wooden fillet. Sight: 11 3/4" H x 15 3/4" W. Framed: 20 1/2" H x 24 1/2" W. Note: Peti Clements was a female African American folk artist. She was raised on a rural Alabama farm and many of her paintings depict scenes of her early everyday life. Her work is represented in the permanent collection of the Tennessee Valley Art Museum, Tuscumbia, AL.
