Pair of William Washington Girard (Tennessee, 1873-1931) oil on paper laid on board landscape paintings including one depicting a stand of trees with one prominent tree to the center of a grassy field and against a multicolored sunset, and the other painting depicting sheaves of wheat in foreground with fall-colored foliage beneath a blue sky background. The tree landscape is signed lower left corner "Girard." The other landscape is unsigned. Both are housed in matching period-carved gilt wood and gesso frames. Sight: 7 1/4" H x 4 3/4" W. Framed: 11 5/8" H x 9 1/8" W. Biography: "William Washington 'Wash' Girard was born on Sycamore Creek in Cheatham County, TN and after high school traveled to New York to study under marine painter Edward Moran. Following the death of his girlfriend, he returned to Nashville, where he continued painting and was a prolific writer. His paintings of beech trees, his favorite theme, were often small and painted in Sycamore Creek or Brown's Creek in the Nashville area. Not overly sentimental, these paintings were praised for their romanticism while remaining realistic." Source: Richard W. Weesner, "William Washington Girard," Tennessee Historical Quarterly Vol. 45, No. 1 (Spring, 1986).

Condition

Both paintings are on paper that has been laid on board. Both are in overall good condition with minor spotting noted to both along the upper edge. Frames with scattered minor losses.
