Rare C.F. Bielefeld, London, signed Victorian Papier Mache Picture Frame, simulating carved oak with elaborate scroll and rosette designs, signed in relief in several spots en verso of papier mache (best seen at both top and bottom center). Gilt inner molding. Exterior dimensions: 49" x 38". Interior opening: 39" x 27 1/2". Mid-19th century. Note: this frame is made of papier mache and is lightweight despite its large size. The wire can be positioned to hang vertically or horizontally. History: Charles Frederick Bielefeld the younger (1803-1864) began his career making paper mache ornaments  in Marylebone with a partnership involving his uncle, also named Charles Frederick Bielefeld. By the 1851 census he was listed as a papier mache manufacturer of frames and architectural ornaments along with his son Julius. (Source: the John Johnson Collection, Bodleian Libraries, Oxford / Victoria and Albert Museum). Few of their signed wares -which gave the visual appearance of heavy wood without the actual weight - have survived.

Condition

Overall good condition; some scattered small losses and areas of wear and shrinkage cracking, repaired break to one corner.
