Exceedingly rare Eastern North Carolina Needlework sampler by Pussey Grady of Duplin County, circa 1820. The silk on linen sampler features 6 alphabets rendered in a variety of stitches including cross, eyelet, box and Queen's stitch, separated by simple borders and signed on the last line. Mounted on a black mat and housed under non-glare glass in a later, wormy-chestnut style frame. Sampler: 16 3/4" H x 11 1/2" W. Frame: 18 3/4" H x 13 1/2" W.

Puss (Pussey) Grady was born 1808 in Duplin County, NC. She was the daughter of Henry Grady and Elizabeth Outlaw, daughter of Revolutionary War hero Captain James Outlaw. Pussey married John Jackson (1802-1877) in 1825 at the age of 16 and gave birth to nine children. She appears to have spent her entire life in Eastern North Carolina and died in neighboring Lenoir County, NC in 1868. A sheet of genealogy information is available to the winning bidder.

PROVENANCE: Private Southern collection.

Condition

Not examined out of frame. Sampler is in very good condition with light toning and fading to thread and ground, no apparent holes or repairs.
