Our July 6-7 Live Auction in Knoxville features more than 1,000 lots of Fine Art, Antiques and Jewelry from the founding family of Rogersville, TN, and from the historic Pinckney family of Charleston, SC; from the estate of William J. Eskind of Nashville; the living estate of Jerry Waters, Maryville, the estate of U.S. Ambassador Ron Schlicher of Brentwood, and from other fine estates and private and museum collections. Samuel David Lev Landau (American, 1895-1979) oil on board modernist painting titled "Mountain Village in Winter." Signed "Lev Landau" lower right and titled with artist name en verso. Molded giltwood frame with peach linen mat and gilt fillet. Sight: 21" H x 15" W. Frame: 29" H x 23" W. 

Biography: Samuel David Landau was born in Poland and emigrated to the U.S. as a child. He studied with Sol Rosen and Phil Reisman and at the Graphic Sketch Club in Philadelphia. Landau exhibited at ACA Galleries in New York, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Carnegie Institute of Pittsburgh (now the Carnegie Museum of Art), the 1951 Biennial at the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, DC, and at the National Academy of Design between 1951 and 1956. He was awarded the Albert Dorn Prize of the Audubon Society in 1965 and was on the Board of Directors for the Artists Equity Association of New York. He also wrote poetry and articles for Jewish American publications.

Condition

Painting in very good condition. Minute 1/8" dia. accretion to center. Some staining/grime to peach mat.
