Sidney Goodman (American, 1936-2018), "A Beating," charcoal on paper drawing, signed lower right/center "Goodman" and dated 1988. Matted and framed under glass in a plain silvered metal frame. Gallery labels en verso.  Sight: 28 1/2 in. H x 37 1/2 in. W.  Frame:  37 in. H x 46 in. W. Exhibited, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, "Sidney Goodman: Man in the Mirror," June 26-Sept. 20, 2009, and illustrated in the catalog (fig. 7 p. 38). In the catalog, curator Julien Robson writes of this piece, "The specter of violence and its incomprehensibility appears and reappears in Goodman's work. Chaotic beatings, broken and pummeled faces, crowds in chaos, are all portrayed with an intensity that is both compelling and unintelligible. In A BEATING (1988), the perpetrators seem driven from behind by a man in military uniform, their victim's incredulity set starkly against an atmospheric backdrop that leaves no clues as to where we are and why this is happening." Note: this drawing is accompanied by a copy of the 2009 PAFA exhibition catalog and a copy of the catalog for the Philadelphia Museum of Art's 1996 exhibition, "Sidney Goodman: Paintings and Drawings, 1959-1995".

Drawing in overall excellent condition, not examined out of frame. Frame has some scratches and spots of surface wear, particularly to the right edge.
