His extended family included several painters, such as James Ward and George Morland, and he dropped his last name "Williams" to distinguish himself from other painters in his family. Percy was known for his detailed scenes of grazing cattle and enjoyed popular success in his lifetime. He exhibited frequently at the Royal Academy of Arts in London, the British Institution, and the Suffolk Street Gallery of the Society of British Artists. One of his patrons was Prince Albert, who gifted Percy's "View of Llyn Dulyn, North Wales," which was exhibited at the Royal Academy, to his wife Queen Victoria. It remains in the Royal Collection.
