Large Southeast Asian, possibly Burmese or Indian, 19th-century parcel gilt silver centerpiece urn or trophy cup (XRF tests sterling or .925). Beaded rim over a frieze with Buddhist or Hindu figures riding on lions and mythical animals, above a band of repousse decoration depicting farming figures in fields with barns, cattle, trees, and elephants. A band of decorative leaves adorns the lower edge of the bowl, and the domed foot features vignettes of twelve Buddhist or Hindu figures. Two C-scroll foliate overlaid handles. No inscriptions, monograms, or maker's markings. 11 in H x 11 in diameter. 41.7 oz troy.
Condition
2" shallow dent to side, with adjacent small hole in band of leaf decoration; one leaf at center very slightly bent; otherwise good condition.
Provenance
The Estate of Jane Dudley, Nashville, TN and Palm Beach, FL. Social icon Jane Dudley (1925-2017) was the founder of one of the South's most prestigious charity events, the Swan Ball. She was married to U.S. Ambassador to Denmark, Guilford Dudley, with whom she shared a landmark Nashville estate, Northumberland, until his death in 2002.
